PRELIMINARY OPENING!  Attention Canadian authors - come to explore in your own backyard. We’ve just reached the Fall season in Newfoundland. I've decided to rent the double room with a separate sitting room/kitchenette beside it on the lower floor. The room is available for booking as of May 14th, 2022. You can book your stay for $100 a day (shared) or $120 a day (for one person), with a minimum stay of one week. You can also  choose to drive here (taking the night ferry from North Sydney to Port aux Basques via the Trans Canada to the Charlottetown turnoff in Terra Nova Park, or you can fly in to the Gander Airport. I will pick you up and return you there for your flight home in exchange for a small fee.

The Double Bedroom

This room will accommodate two writers on the lower floor as it includes a Queen-sized bed and a double. There are two writing desks with computer chairs, reading lamps over the beds, more lamps over the desks, an armoire for hanging clothes, and drawers for folded clothes.

The Author's Sitting Room

This is a large space just outside the double room on the lower floor, that has a second armoire, a small couch and barrel chair, and a kitchenette area with a coffee maker, toaster, and fridge. There is also a powder room on the lower floor.

The Private Bedroom

This room is not currently available. The private room has a fabulous view of Clode Sound. It makes a perfect retreat for one writer with a queen-sized bed, an antique writing desk, and plenty of closet space for hanging or folded clothes. This room will be $130 a day (when available).

Your stay at Ocean view provides you with gorgeous water views from the living room or the back deck. You can walk to the wharf and in addition to views of a variety of docks and boat houses at the center of the village, there is also a small waterfall. The Retreat is situated in the middle of Terra Nova National Park which has numerous hiking trails of varying difficulty. The Park’s Information Centre also has a sea life petting aquarium! Plus, we can take two optional excursions for sight-seeing trips each week, one for a half day, and one for the full day. The idea behind the Retreat is to offer you a balance of inspiration for your writing and time free from all distractions, so you can spend as much time working on your writing goals as you desire. Plus, all three of your meals are cooked for you with attention to any dietary needs. We will even take a picnic basket when/if we do our road trips.

BYOB and bring your computer to write up your next project. Whale watching season is July and August every year. Clode Sound is visited by Minke and Humpback Whales, Dolphins, Orcas – all of which follow the Caplin into Clode Sound. Plus, there are resident moose, otters, loons, seagulls, eagles, and a variety of songbirds which you may see.

I chose this place for my new home because of its protected seaside location in Terra Nova National Park. Charlottetown Newfoundland is located on Clode Sound / Bonavista Bay. The views from my living room or back deck are so spectacular that I'm anxious to share them with writer friends, new or old. The idea in establishing this Retreat is to give authors a vacation from everything that keeps them from focusing on writing while simultaneously offering inspiration. This is a perfect location for sightseeing or simply setting up to write on the deck or in your room.

You'll be provided with a bedroom (private or shared options), a writing space, several areas to congregate, a fantastic view of Clode Sound, whale watching from the living room or deck (in season), and sight seeing or hiking excursions twice a week. All of your meals will be provided (including picnics if you plan a hike or come on organized trips). You'll have access to laundry facilities or you can ask to have it done for you for a minimal charge. The house has two washrooms, one on each floor. Also available in Charlottetown: a general store, a hairdresser/spa, fishing spots, and depending upon your interest, special boat tours may be arranged.

Proof of your double dose vaccination for Covid-19 will be required for both your safety and that of other people. (Sorry, I make no apologies for this health safety requirement.) Stay tuned for announcements of the various bookings available, which will be posted as soon as I know the date when construction is finished. Then visitors will be able to book either a private room with a view of the Sound, or share a large room downstairs with a second living space and kitchenette as well as a washroom just outside their bedroom door.

Below is an arial view of my section of Charlottetown some 30-40 years ago, before my house (or the neighbours') were built. That is the government wharf where the  salt ships arrive in the summer. If you are here in their season, you can also see otters, dolphins, and a variety of whales in the sound. This is a place where the Caplin roll, which is what attracts the whales. I am told by locals that just seeing them roll is an event in its own right.
